Destination: Lost

Get travelling. Get reading. Get lost.

Hello! I’m Kirstie, a 23 year old PR with a passion for that big world out there. I’m here to take you on my adventures but also my day dreams.

I was dreaming of taking a gap year before I had even taken my GCSEs.  I spent my paper round money on travel magazines, not monthly glossies and I was convinced that the best job in the world had to be a travel writer. So aged 18 and finally set free upon the world, I travelled around Peru for two months. It was everything I had imagined. I knew I couldn’t stop there.

Although my gap year has been and gone, I’m determined to fit as much travel around my life as possible.  It seems every new travel article I read inspires me to add another sight/site to my bucket list.

Here’s to travel!

Why did you start a travel blog?

I’ve been blogging about my travels for friends and family ever since that first trip to Peru. I’ve never travelled with any gadgets so the blogs were always dependent on just how sticky that internet cafe keyboard was or how tired I was feeling when I wrote the post. As an English Language and Linguistics student it felt like the right time to start collating all my blog posts in one place – and Destination: Lost was born.

Where have you travelled to?

You can see the full list on the Countries page but I’ve been to 5 continents so far: Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and South America.

What is your favourite country?

Peru. I think it will always win my heart because it was where I first travelled ‘properly’ as an adult so I probably look back on it with rose tinted glasses anyway. However, the people were the kindest and friendliest I’ve met, the scenery was dramatic and gorgeous and I spent two months having the most amount of fun. Heck, even one person from my tour now lives in Peru! It was hard not to fall in love.

Where have you just come back from?

I’ve just come back from Austria – a week of swimming in lakes and hiking up mountains.

Where’s next on your list?

If I had the time and the money, there’s a big trip in the planning around South America. I might even drop into El Salvador and Panama so I can say I’ve seen the whole of Latin America, but I like to travel slowly so I know I need at least 6 months. I also have an itching to do a grand road trip around the U.S. , even though I’m an appalling driver.

More realistically, I’d love to do a few weekend breaks around Europe, I definitely don’t make the most of living in such close proximity to so many different countries and cultures. I’ve also met a few people on my travels that I keep promising to visit (I’m dying to visit I swear!).

Why ‘Destination: Lost’?

Some of the most memorable moments of my short travelling life have occurred whilst I was lost.

As a child we would spend hours on long summer days exploring new paths in the woods behind my house. If we were lost it just made it all the more exciting.

Driving through The Smoky Mountains as a teenager as the sun went down, not knowing if we were on the road to the nearest town or just heading further into the trees was thrilling. My brother and I even started to ration out the snacks, worried we wouldn’t make it to a motel for the night.

And now that I’m an adult, I’m always keen to wander the streets without a map and not really a clue where I’m going. It’s also a pretty cheesy thing to say but when you’re travelling it’s quite easy to lose yourself and all your worries by playing ‘anonymous’ in a new city.
